Praised for pioneering the new wave of Latin music into the global scene, Columbian singer and rapper J Balvin is one of the best selling Latin music artists worldwide with global hits like ‘Mi Gente’, ‘Machika’ and ‘I Like It’. Also famously referred to as the ‘Prince of Reggaeton’, J Balvin has been known to push forward different ideas, identities and even social messages through the use of reggaeton in his songs.
Throughout his career, he has been garnering love from both the public and critics alike and has even made it to the 2020 TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. And now there is one more person in his life who will probably be influenced by him the most; his son who he had with his girlfriend Valentina Ferrer. Valentina Comes From a Humble Family
Ferrer was born on September 19, 1993 in Córdoba, Argentina to parents Jose Luis Ferrer and Alejandra Pezza. Her father was a fruit vendor while his mother worked as a teacher in Argentina. Valentina was the middle child from a family of five children. She spent most of her early years in Argentina and even finished her schooling there. She then went to attend physical education at the University of Cordoba.
As a young woman growing up, Valentina was known to be an adventurous type and loved playing sports like basketball and water sports.
Valentina was Scouted as a Model
While Valentina was studying at the University of Cordoba, Ferrer worked as a maid and house painter and baked and sold gluten-free cakes with her sister in order to pay the bills of her expenses. As per her interview with Newyork times, she always wanted to be a dancer or a model since her childhood. So, she wasn’t one of them who would settle for less and let go of her dreams.
In this course, she moved to Buenos Aires to pursue her dream of becoming a model. After her struggling days, in 2014, Valentina Ferrer was finally scouted by a modelling agency named Elite Model Management. Ferrer then began her modelling journey officially. Talking about her experience, she recalled:
“After studying physical education in Buenos Aires, when I was 20 years old I went with my friends on vacation to Miami and that’s where Erin Lucas, who was the director back then of Elite Model Management, saw me and asked me if I wanted to be a model.”
She walked her first runway ‘Miami Swim Week’ for which she was paid $100.
Valentina Represented her country in the Miss Universe Pageant
Valentina’s agent suggested she compete in Miss Argentina in 2014 to make her portfolio even more attractive. And on October 10, 2014, Valentina Ferrer was crowned Miss Argentina 2014. After her win, she went to the United States to take part in the Miss Universe as a representative from Argentina.
In the pageant, she was placed in the Top 10 in the overall competition and in the Top 5 in the National Costume competition. Her achievement in the pageant broke the 7 year long disappointments in the pageant.
Ferrer has Worked with Notable Brands During her Modeling Career
After her stint with the beauty pageant, Valentina started getting love calls from a lot of fashion houses and runway shows. Some of them include brands like Ralph Lauren, Chloe and Nike and shows like Funkshion Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and Miami Fashion Week. She has also graced the covers of Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Vogue Mexico and Women’s Health.
Ferrer has come a long way from her humble beginnings in Cordoba, Argentina having been photographed for top magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and after being part of the Moschino Campaign.
Valentina Also made her Acting Debut in a TV Series
In 2019, Valentina Ferrer made her acting debut in the TV series Betty en NY. She appeared in one episode of the show as herself. She talked about her experience of working in the show and said:
“I started working on the series Betty en NY and I loved the experience. It’s a comical series and I love comedy, laughing at myself. I play myself so that’s the best part. I used my name and everything. It was very interesting and fun.”
Valentina met J Balvin on the Set of One of his Music Videos
Valentina and J Balvin first met each other on the set of his ‘Sigo Extrañándote’ music video shoot in 2017. Shortly after that, the couple started dating and a year later they made their red carpet debut at the New York Fashion Week. Unfortunately, some reports suggested that the couple broke up but soon got back together.
When asked about what made her fall in love with him, she simply said:
“José is very special, sensitive and affectionate. This is what made me fall in love and always keeps me connected to him.” The couple has a very strong relationship that even long-distance and quarantine could not separate them.
J Balvin and Valentina Ferrer Welcomed their First Child in 2021
In April of 2021, during an interview with Vogue Mexico, Valentina Ferrer confirmed that she was pregnant with the couple’s first child. On June 27, 2021, she gave birth to a baby boy. The couple named their son Rio which is the river that flows as J Balvin says in his song Querido Rio. She took to Instagram to share the arrival of her son Rio with a picture of her holding the hand of her newborn.
In her interview, Valentina revealed that the arrival of their child gave them light and energy and that now he is their everything. She also shared that J Balvin is incredible with fatherhood and always tries to help her with things like bathing and feeding the child and even changing his diapers. They believe that parenting is teamwork and it won’t ever work if one parent tries to do everything on their own.
Valentina is now a Model turned Entrepreneur
As a person who spent a lot of time in physical sports and pilates, Valentina Ferrera has grown to love anything health and wellness related more and more. So it would make sense for her to grasp the opportunity to co-own the Australian vegan nutritional supplement company ‘Kapowder Superfoods’ in 2019. A longtime consumer of the brand herself, she was hands-on with the idea of being able to help young girls out there with her new venture. She said:
“Sure it’s great to be 100% clean all the time, but in reality, it’s not like that. I want young girls to know balance is key, and including a healthy lifestyle rather than a diet fast is the answer.”
Even during her pregnancy, Valentina said that she was taking the supplements made by her company and claimed that they helped her maintain her energy levels. As for her future plans for the company, she said:
“We are going to launch a line with everything that I used, including some skin products, which is very important in pregnancy.”
Valentina Ferrer surely is an incredible woman; balancing work and new parenthood along the way, and J Balvin is a very lucky man to have her beside him.
