Karin Had a Normal Childhood
Karin Ingrid Winslow was born on December 15, 1967, in Connecticut, USA to an upper-middle-class family. Growing up she had a pretty normal childhood with her having no connection to Hollywood. Till now she has remained tightlipped regarding her parents’ names in an effort to give them full privacy.
Karin Was Married To Buck Angel
Before marrying Lana, Karin was already married to Buck Angel from 1998 to 2001. Karin allegedly left Buck for Lana which prompted him to file for divorce. Buck Angel is a trans man himself. He used to work in adult movies as an actor and would also produce these films. As of lately, he works as a sex educator.
Karin and Lana Had a Complicated Start to their Romance
Following the release of The Matrix in 1999, Lana who was still living her wrongfully assigned gender, started to attend the Los Angeles-based club ‘The Dungeon’ where she met Karin. Karin used to work there under the name Ilsa Strix and took Lana as one of her clients.
When the two of them met, both of them were married to other people. Karin was married to Buck Angel and Lana and Larry was married to Thea Bloom since 1993. In 2002, after allegedly discovering Karin and Lana’s relationship, Bloom divorced him. Karin had also divorced the previous year.
After separating from their previous partners, both Karin and Lana were now free to be with one another even in public places. They made their first public appearance hand in hand at the premiere of The Matrix Reloaded in 2003 which was a sequel to The Matrix.
Karin has Some Acting Experience
In 2006, Karin made her acting debut in the 8-minute short film Demon Familiars. She is credited under her pseudonym Ilsa Strix. So far this has been her one and only attempt in acting. But with a director and producer wife, she might get inspired one day.
Karin and Lana Exchanged Vows in 2009
After publicly announcing their romantic entanglement, Karin and Lana would go on to date for another six years before finally tying the knot. Throughout the course of their relationship there were many rumors regarding the transition process of Lana. Many near them refuted the rumours saying that she simply prefers to stay in private and not do any interviews.
Later on, it was revealed that she had started her transition journey after the release of the movie Speed Racer’ in 2008. This means that when Karin and Lana married one another, Lana was already at the beginning stages of her transition.
Karin also Worked for the Community
In 2014, it was revealed that Karin Winslow was the board member of Chicago House, which aimed at providing housing and compassionate, client-centred support services to people living with or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. During her time as a board member, she helped host many events including the one benefit program called TransReelization hosted by her wife and her sister at the Chicago House’ Translife Center.
At the moment, it seems she is no longer a board member. She is also said to have worked alongside the Social Security Agency for the betterment of the community she is living in.
Karin’s Sister-in-law Also Transitioned
Lana’s younger brother Andy Wachowski also transitioned and officially changed her name to Lily Wachowski. Lily made her first public appearance following her transition in 2016. In her public statement, she emphasized the privilege she got from her position. She said:
“I am one of the lucky ones. Having the support of my family and the means to afford doctors and therapists has given me the chance to actually survive this process. Transgender people without support, means and privilege do not have this luxury. And many do not survive.”

It is never easy for anyone to come out as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The same was for Lana who grew up feeling confused about her gender identity. After gradually finding her people, she opened up about her truth and doing so found immense love and support from them. One person who has seen her truest self and still fell in love with her is her wife Karin.
The couple have been married for more than 13 years and are still very much in love. They support one another and even though the world might still not accept them with open arms, they have each other to carry on through the hard times in their lives.
